Helping Children with Loss

Helping Children with Loss is designed to be used by any adult having ongoing interactions with children, such as parents, grandparents, close family relatives or friends, foster parents, school counselors, and teachers. Participation in this program can be life-changing for adults and a multi-generational gift to children.

As an Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist I have seen first hand the tole that uncompleted grief takes on individuals and families.

We humans grieve many types of losses not just loss by death and often we adults overlook a loss that, hardly affects us but may have a great impact on a child. Learning to recognize these losses is the first step toward equipping our children to deal with the many losses we know they will face in life. To watch a child grieve and not know what to do is a profoundly difficult experience for parents, teachers, and caregivers. Yet, there are guidelines for helping children develop a lifelong, healthy response to loss.

The Grief Recovery Method is a proven way to deal with the pain of loss. It's not about forgetting your loved one. It's about learning how to live with their memory in a healthy way.

Mr. Rogers only endorsed three things during his lifetime, and one was our text book for this course, When Children Grieve…For Adults to Help Children Deal with Death, Divorce, Pet Loss, Moving, and Other Losses.

“There isn’t anyone in life who hasn’t experienced some kind of loss. It’s comforting to know that we are not alone in our sadness and that practical, easy-to-read, thoughtful help is available by way of Russell Friedman, John James, and Leslie Landon Matthew’s gentle insights on the pages of When Children Grieve.
Thank you, Neighbors for your obvious care.”
Mr. Fred Rogers

The Helping Children with Loss program is a step-by-step educational and skill development program. Parents and other adult caregivers are given tools to help children manage their current and future losses. This program serves as an intervention during a current loss and also teaches tools that will serve the child throughout their lifetime. What better way to build mental wellness and resiliency in our children than to give them age-appropriate tools to help them effectively grieve the many losses we know they will experience during their life.  NOW IS THE TIME to introduce these tools for effective grieving.

Helping Children with Loss is designed to be used by any adult having ongoing interactions with children, such as parents, grandparents, close family relatives or friends, foster parents, school counselors, and teachers. Participation in this program can be life-changing for adults and a multi-generational gift to children.
